Friends Tom and Mark set out from
Nishinomiya Japan for a three day sail.
Ports we wanted to visit included Ushimado
and Kiba. We set off at 2:00am 19th March
2008 and arrived 11 hours later at Ushimado.
On the way we encountered some 35 knot winds
just by that huge AkashiOhashi and later in
the day more managebale 28 knots winds which
we sailed through pretty well. We are
sailing a 30 foot sports cruiser, Spindrift,
and on this trip we used only our mainsail
and jib or genoa. It was a great trip and
this video shows the second day heading for
Kiba. We had some fabulous winds and boats
speeds around the 6 - 7 knots mark.

Gitana 13" Makes Sailing History A French
crew of ten made sailing history traveling
14,500 miles from New York to San Francisco
on February 28th, 2008. The boat was
captained by Lionel Lemonchois and went by
way of Cape Horn. The weather was rough at
Cape Horn and the vessel had to take shelter
for 5 days. "Gitana 13" is a 110 foot
Catamaran whose speed can reach up to 43
knots. They hit light winds on the last leg
entering the mouth of the San Francisco Bay.
Even in light winds they passed under the
Golden Gate Bridge at 10 to 14 knots.
The finish line is between Alcatraz Lighthouse and Coit Tower. The oldest record of this route was the famous passage of the "Flying Cloud" in 1854 with the time of 89 days and 8 hours. The passage was dubbed "Route D'Or" for the California Gold Rush. In 1998 "Aquitainne Innovations", another French vessel, broke that record making the time of 57 days and 3 hours. The "Gitana 13" will makes its next stop in Tokyo on its way around the world. Horn 23 times. In 1900 she

Auckland
The barque James Craig was built
by Bartram, Haswell & Co. in
Sunderland, England in 1874.
Originally named Clan Macleod,
her maiden voyage was to Peru.
For 26 years she plied the trade routes of the world carrying general cargoes during which period she rounded Cape Horn 23 times. In 1900 she was purchased by Mr J J Craig of Auckland and was used on trans-Tasman trade routes as a general cargo carrier. In 1905 she was re-named James Craig and then a short six years later, in 1911, she was laid up because increasing competition from steam ships made sailing vessels uneconomical. She was then stripped and used as a copra hulk in New Guinea. After the First World War there was an acute shortage of cargo ships. This gave James Craig a new lease of life after being towed from New Guinea to Sydney for re-fitting. (more) (less) |

Storm Tactics DVD and Handbook

weather storms with confidence.
Available at:

Purchase the Storm Tactics video and the recently revised companion 256 page Handbook 3rd Edition at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics DVD or VHS: $29.95; HandBook: $19.95; DVD/BOOK COMBO: $39.95 Closing in on 200,000 miles of blue water voyaging, Lin and Larry Pardey are recognized as the sailing world's most experienced and knowledgeable cruising couple. In Storm Tactics, they provide a detailed look at the techniques and gear that have kept them safe at sea. "... I wanted to show how the sailor's safety valve--heaving-to-works, and the slick it creates. It's hard for people to imagine the almost magic effect of a slick as it saps the power of breaking waves...." - Larry Pardey "One of the reasons I wanted to sail east-to-west around Cape Horn was to take video shots proving that small vessels can safely weather storms if they are well outfitted and efficiently handled," Larry Pardey stated after his record-breaking voyage. Lin and Larry completed their against-the-wind rounding of the Great Southern Capes on board their engineless 29-foot Taleisin, weathering nine days of storm-force winds to reach Puerto Montt in Chile. There they interviewed several high-latitude voyagers, prepared the narrative, and shot further detailed footage to complete the Storm Tactics video, a project Lin and Larry conceived almost ten years ago. Add the Storm Tactics Handbook to the Video and you've got the ultimate reference set. Modern methods of heaving-to for survival in extreme conditions. Trysail and para-anchor technology for all types of boats and sailors. Concise and easy to understand, Storm Tactics Handbook covers all types of sailing vessels from the most classic of cruising yachts to modern race boats. This is MUST KNOW information for every sailor, coastal or offshore. Used as a text at sailing schools and cruising seminars for offshore rallies in the UK, the USA and New Zealand. Now in its sixth printing, Lin and Larry add revisions to each new printing to keep Storm Tactics Handbook up to date. "...Surely this book will result in cruising sailors going through gales at sea in a lot more comfort and with a lot more confidence." -- Roger C. Taylor, Author of Elements of Seamanship "We seldom review a book twice, but there are exceptions for exceptional books and this is one." -- Classic Boat Magazine Purchase the Storm Tactics video and the companion 176 page Handbook at http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/pardey/storm_tactics DVD or VHS: $29.95; HandBook: $19.95: DVD/HANDBOOK COMBO: $39.95 (more) (less) |
